Industry has failed to address three key issues: Sterility, Cross Contamination from saliva/blood splatter and Cup Slippage. All DPA’s manufactured and sold today are non-sterile. Air borne pathogens and related diseases are increasing at an alarming rate creating an urgent need for sterile DPA. Cross contamination from Saliva/blood that splatters during the procedure is a serious concern for both hygienists and patients alike and must be addressed. Cup Slippage along with noise, vibration etc. are other minor concerns overlooked by the dental industry.

AJK Engineering has embraced the challenge and intuitively developed a radically distinctive DPA using Virtual Product Development (VDP) methodology. The revolutionary designed DPA is geared for high volume manufacturing and assembly in a clean room sterile environment. Space age design of the cup with computer generated golf ball dimples and wiper virtually eliminates splatter. Integral design of one piece over-molded cup with gear solves the cup slippage problem. Noise, vibration, ergonomics, cup access under the gums and other important issues are also addressed.

Science behind how splatter guard works:

Lotus DPA is a unique, innovative and revolutionary product that addresses a long term unmet need for the dental hygiene industry. The splatter created by rotating cup has been a chief safety concern among the hygienists due to HIV and other airborne viruses. Dentists are concerned with increasing cost of the disposable DPA.

Lotus DPA addresses both performance, safety and cost issues. In order to make it splatter free, the prophy angle requires the following:

  • Cup that accumulates and retains the saliva
  • Splatter guard that eliminates the accumulated saliva from the outside of the cup during each rotation.
  • A precise positioning of the wiper and a unique shape with thin blade that would remain stiff during the procedure, stay in constant contact with the Cup and yet be flexible enough for the patient comfort and effective splatter reduction.
